Hi, Rich

Hey, it’s a Monday again, blue as the sky.

You might not have known it from speaking to him in person–because you knew him a short time–but Richard himself would run into some substantial melancholy. You can sure hear it in his songs, though.

It was a good thing that he shared his darker moments with us as well as the ones that blazed with light. He shared the complete range of his feelings: each of them amplifies our understanding of the human experience.

That, I think, is the purpose of art. God must like art, because I have a feeling God wants us to be as human as we can be.

Richard lived to turn himself inside out and bring others into his heart. He had a brilliant memory, too. I’m writing about his creative process and that’s one his more outstanding traits. He could remember the tiniest incident, the exact imprint it made on his spirit, for decades. He used his memory to advantage when he wrote songs.

I still don’t know why he died when he did, but I do know it makes me wonder. God’s reasons are better than ours. God makes me wonder.

They always called Richard homeless, but I don’t think he is anymore.

Yea, it’s me. Just got back from Bukavu. My first trip back since we left in 1988. Went to the house, but it is falling apart and about to be torn down. The city isn’t much different just a lot more people and traffic. I’ve been converting pics as well but I only have one of the trip we took into the interior.

Hey, is this Ted Harkema? We had a good time sleeping up in your attic, learning to count in Swahili by playing 21 at your basketball hoop, climbing the mountain at Virunga, and riding around on your motorcycle.

I’m working on getting some of those pics converted. Most of them are still in slide format. Great to hear from you!!

Hi Rich,
I was searching thru a website where you had one of your sites for sale. I was intrigued because it was a site that I had done business with in the past. I dug a little deeper and I found this url in your profile.
I love this blog. I will bookmark it and comeback. I have been convicted lately about letting the world close in on my walk with God. I’ve had my priorities way out of wack and I have subscribed to some vain philosophies. I appreciate so much your very straight forward God honoring approach to your business.

Thanks for taking the time to write. He touched a lot of people through America and on the continent of Africa. He was consistent with his life, a great husband, father, friend, teacher, leader.
